ABOUT the ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION CHALLENGE (EIC)
Innovation in Clean-Tech + Market Opportunity = Solutions for the Planet

Escalating worldwide competition for resources such as energy and water and the changing global climate are creating opportunities for innovative technologies and new ventures to serve both existing and emerging markets.

The UW Environmental Innovation Challenge (EIC), fosters interdisciplinary student teams who work collaboratively to develop solutions to a specific problem of environmental significance. The Challenge in April sparks product designs that capitalized on emerging market conditions and proposed business concepts that promise significant financial reward while enhancing environmental sustainability.

For the EIC, student teams (frequently in partnership with companies, government agencies, etc) work to develop pioneering methods, designs, and products that provide innovative solutions, reduce environmental impacts, improve ecological sustainability, and improve environmental quality while promoting viable business concepts. Each student team developed a proof-of-concept, prototype or simulation, as well as a 5- to 7-page business summary that demonstrates well-formulated business models with significant potential for growth.

Why a Challenge?

Challenges are recognized as an effective platform for stimulating innovation. Examples include the X Prize and the Solar Car challenges, which attract and motivate innovative thinkers to create solutions to the important problems facing our society. Leveraging the momentum behind the University of Washington's strong track record in environmentally related research and the existing entrepreneurial culture within the UW, the EIC focuses campus-wide attention on environmental issues, potential solutions, and start-up opportunities. It stimulates increased interactions among the University, environmental, and business communities.
